Colorado Mountain Rail Project: Transforming Transportation in the Yampa Valley

Exciting changes could soon reshape travel in the Yampa Valley as the Colorado Mountain Rail Project moves forward. Designed to provide a safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly transportation alternative, this ambitious plan has the potential to connect Oak Creek to Craig, making travel through Steamboat Springs quicker and more convenient than ever.

A Competitive and Safer Travel Option

The proposed second phase of the project—connecting Craig to Oak Creek—would offer train rides that are competitive with current driving times along U.S. Highway 40, a route that has seen increasing traffic congestion and safety concerns. According to Paul DesRocher, Director of the Division of Transit and Rail at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the core purpose of the Mountain Rail Project is to provide safe travel alternatives for residents, workers, and visitors alike.

“The foundational reason for this project is to create safe alternatives,” DesRocher stated during a recent public meeting held at the Bud Werner Memorial Library in Steamboat Springs.

Station Locations Across the Yampa Valley

The current plan outlines multiple station stops to ensure accessibility for communities across the valley, including:

  • Steamboat Springs: Two proposed stations, one near downtown and another near Steamboat Resort
  • Hayden: Near the historic depot
  • Oak Creek: Between Bell and Sharp avenues
  • Craig: Where the railway intersects with Yampa Avenue

These stations will provide a seamless connection for commuters, visitors, and resort employees, offering a reliable alternative to crowded highways.

Benefits of the Mountain Rail Project

The Colorado Mountain Rail Project is poised to bring numerous benefits to Steamboat Springs and the broader Yampa Valley:

  • Reduced Traffic Congestion: By lowering vehicle miles traveled, the project can ease rush-hour stress and improve safety along U.S. Highway 40.
  • Environmental Impact: Fewer cars on the road means reduced greenhouse gas emissions and improved air quality.
  • Economic Growth: The rail system would connect employees to work opportunities, especially for resort staff traveling from Hayden and Craig.
  • Community Connectivity: Enhanced mobility options through train service will link towns across the region, creating a stronger sense of community.

Project Timeline and Next Steps

Phase 1 of the Colorado Mountain Rail Project—stretching from Union Station in downtown Denver to Granby—is set to be completed by 2027. The second phase, connecting Craig to Oak Creek, will follow sometime after.

CDOT officials are actively working with Union Pacific Railroad to lease and upgrade existing rail lines while planning the rail design and service schedules. A virtual public meeting in late February or early March will reveal more details, including completion timelines, train schedules, and fare structures.

An Environmentally Friendly Future

The rail project also represents a critical step toward a sustainable transportation future. Project planners are considering advanced propulsion technologies, including electric, battery-electric, hydrogen, and biofuel-powered trains to align with environmental goals.

Additionally, funding for state rail projects will include Congestion Impact Fees on rental cars beginning in 2025, further supporting the project’s development.
