Just because July is winding down doesn’t mean wildflower season is over. In fact, late July and early August can be one of the best times to catch a vibrant explosion of color across our high-alpine meadows and lakesides.
We’ve put together a local approved wildflower guide with three of our favorite spots still showing signs of summer.
Here’s where to go:
1. 🌺 Dumont Lake: Easy Access + Big Color
Located just 22 miles from downtown Steamboat near Rabbit Ears Pass, Dumont Lake is a classic favorite for wildflower lovers. You’ll spot paintbrush, columbine, lupine, and more blooming in full force around the lake and surrounding forest meadows. With easy access and wide trails, this is a great stop for families, casual walkers, and anyone looking for a beautiful picnic spot.
Local Tip: Pack a camp chair and stay for sunset, it’s one of the most peaceful spots in the valley, and the evening light on the flowers is magical.
2. 🌿 Gilpin Lake Trail: A Classic Alpine Escape
This is one of the most iconic hikes near Steamboat, and for good reason. The Gilpin Lake Trail in the Zirkel Wilderness offers jaw-dropping alpine scenery and a showcase of wildflowers as you gain elevation toward the lake.
While the 9-mile roundtrip hike is moderately challenging, the payoff is worth it: lush meadows bursting with color, clear blue lake views, and that unmistakable summer-in-the-high-country smell. Expect to see elephant head, bluebells, fireweed, and more.
Pro Tip: Get an early start and wear layers, it can get chilly at elevation, even in August.
3. 🌼 Flat Tops Wilderness: A Sea of Wildflowers and Solitude
The Flat Tops Wilderness is a little farther out, but it’s one of the most under-the-radar places to catch wildflowers and serene landscapes with fewer crowds. Trailheads like Stillwater Reservoir or Devil’s Causeway offer access to wildflower meadows with a huge variety of blooms, framed by the dramatic rock formations the area is known for.
You’ll find mountain parsley, larkspur, yarrow, and dozens of lesser-known species blanketing the valley floor. Don’t forget your camera!
Getting There: Plan for a longer drive and bring all your hiking essentials, this is true wilderness.
🏔️ It’s Not Too Late to See the Show
Don’t let the calendar fool you, wildflower season is still going strong in many parts of the Yampa Valley. With a cooler spring and steady snowmelt, the blooms are holding longer than usual at higher elevations.
So lace up those hiking boots, grab a reusable water bottle, and get out there while the season’s still showing off. You don’t need to go far to find beauty, we’re lucky to live in a valley where nature puts on a show just about every weekend.
