Yampa River Festival 2026: One of Steamboat’s Most Loved Traditions Returns

Yampa River Festival 2026

Every spring in Steamboat Springs, there’s a moment where the valley starts to shift. The snow begins melting out of the mountains, the Yampa starts rising, and people naturally find their way back toward the river.

That’s part of what makes the Yampa River Festival feel so uniquely local.

Returning May 28–31, 2026, the 46th annual festival is more than just a weekend of races and river events — it’s one of the clearest reflections of Steamboat’s connection to the Yampa River and the outdoor culture that has shaped the community for decades.

What Is the Yampa River Festival?

Hosted by Friends of the Yampa, the festival began in 1980 as a way to celebrate and protect one of the last free-flowing rivers in the West. Over the years, it has evolved into a true hometown event centered around recreation, conservation, and community.

What makes the festival special is that it still feels deeply connected to Steamboat itself. You’ll see longtime locals, river guides, families, paddlers, and first-time spectators all gathered in the same places along the river.

It’s competitive at times, but it never loses its local feel.

What to Expect During Yampa River Festival Weekend

The main festival events take place Saturday, May 30, though activities run throughout the weekend.

Some of the most recognizable events during the weekend include:

  • The Drew Hyde Raft Race and Raft Rodeo at Charlie’s Hole
  • SUP races and river events
  • Crazy River Dog and Tube Rodeo competitions
  • Community gatherings, vendor booths, and river-side spectating
  • Live music, food, beer gardens, and conservation-focused events throughout town

This year’s festival will look a little different than some previous years due to lower river flows and reduced snowpack across the Yampa Basin. Friends of the Yampa recently announced the cancellation of the Adam Mayo Memorial Fish Creek kayak race because of low water conditions, a reminder of how closely tied the festival is to the health and flow of the river itself.

There’s also an environmental side to the weekend that sometimes gets overlooked. Friends of the Yampa has long used the festival to raise awareness around river conservation and stewardship, something that feels increasingly important as growth continues across the Yampa Valley.

Why the Yampa River Matters to Steamboat

The Yampa River is one of the defining features of Steamboat Springs. It cuts directly through town, shapes the valley physically and culturally, and remains one of the few largely free-flowing rivers in the Colorado River system.

For locals, the river is woven into daily life:

  • Summer tubing and paddleboarding
  • Fishing and rafting
  • Walking and biking along the Core Trail
  • Community events and gatherings

And while the festival itself is a lot of fun, part of what makes it meaningful is that it reminds people not to take the river for granted.

A Weekend That Feels Like Steamboat

One thing that stands out about Yampa River Festival weekend is how authentically “Steamboat” it feels.

It’s not polished or overly produced. It’s river gear in truck beds, lawn chairs along the banks, kids running around downtown, and people spending entire afternoons outside watching events at Charlie’s Hole.

That sense of tradition is part of why the event has lasted more than four decades.

A Different River Year in 2026

This year’s festival also arrives during a noticeably lower snowpack year across much of Colorado and the Yampa River Basin. Water officials and forecasters have been watching lower-than-normal runoff projections after a warm and relatively dry winter.

That reality adds another layer of perspective to this year’s Yampa River Festival. Events like this have always been about more than recreation — they’re also a reminder of how connected the Steamboat community is to the health of the river itself.

Even in lower water years, the Yampa remains central to life in the valley, which is part of why conservation and stewardship continue to be such an important part of the conversation locally.

Final Thought

In a town that continues to evolve, events like the Yampa River Festival help preserve some of the culture and community connection that have always made Steamboat special.

Whether you’re participating, spectating, or just walking along the river during the weekend, it’s one of the best reminders of how much the Yampa River brings people together and shapes life here in the Yampa Valley.
